What is Google drev?

The concept for drev came from the initial need to share our prototype with others, initially those who came up with the idea and a small circle of friends, but later the plan was to make drev an e-commerce platform for individual artists and galleries.

How do I use drev?

Follow the steps below to use drev in your browser, in a desktop application or inside a Chrome extension.

When you are ready to create your art, you can select one of the six basic "Trees", which contain some basic shapes and some extra basic features, like the color and size of the tree or the types of leaves. You can use our "Tools" (a.k.a. fill/opacity/transform tools) to create a nice shape that you can resize and preview in real-time.

How do I save my art?

When you are done making your art, press the pencil icon and choose to save it. When you have made a selection you can preview it and scale it, so you can create multiple copies of your art. As soon as you're done previewing the art, click the pencil icon again to save. When you have saved the art, just open it in your browser or any desktop application or inside the Chrome extension.

Drev allows you to create art without a computer. You can save a copy of your art for offline viewing using the Google Drive feature. Go to "Settings" on your drev.com profile page, open the "Drive" tab and add the drive. Once done, create a new document, choose "Save As" and save your art. You can select a different art file format and add the Google Drive link on your profile.

Google drev types

Syntax highlighting of drev types can be enabled by changing the language to drev for Chrome, chrome-drev-translator for Firefox, chrome-drev-chat for Opera, or chrome-drev for Microsoft Edge.

Note: New drev types in Chrome are completely experimental and might even be removed from Chrome by the time this article is published.

What is a drev type

A drev type is a text field that is filled out, perhaps with several fields, by default to display a group of items that can be filtered in a gallery or lists. For example, if we had a car gallery, it might look like the following:

Each column is filled in automatically. The first one will display an image of a car, the second one will display the color of the car, and so on.

If we wanted to group these images in a gallery by color, it would look like the following:

And that’s pretty much all it takes to use a drev type. And that’s basically the big difference between a drev type and a table view: a drev type is all about allowing the user to display a set of items, and a table view is about displaying an entire list.

But does it really matter?

Well, actually it does, because table views (and many other native interfaces) rely on styling and the user’s awareness of these styles. But, there are ways to make drev types look great even in the default setting, as you can see in the example below:

Of course, styling isn’t everything. Drev types still suffer from many of the same performance problems that make table views slow. For example, every row must load a list (or multiple lists) in order to display the items, which means every row loads one more list than it needs. We are sure that we can improve drev types to be as fast as table views in the near future, but that will be for another article.
